(50 miles and 26 locks each way)
A week gives you time to cruise along this lovely waterway. There is much to see and explore. Llangollen itself is a most beautiful little mountain town with interesting shops, Steam Railway, ruined Castle and beautiful walks into the mountains. On the way up the canal you cross two of the finest Aqueducts in the world – Chirk, which runs parallel to a large railway viaduct, and the magnificent Pontcysyllte, over 1000ft (300m) long and 120ft (35m) high over the rushing waters of the River Dee.
The Pontcysyllte Aquaduct is now a World Heritage Site details can be found here.
The quiet and gentle pastures of Cheshire and the rolling hills of Shropshire give way to the impressive mountain scenery that adorns the upper River Dee valley to Llangollen. If time allows, a detour may be made onto the first few restored miles of the Montgomery Canal, which will eventually carry boats to Welshpool and Newtown in mid Wales.
A selection of places to visit on the Llangollen Canal include:
Every July the International-Eisteddfod is held at Llangollen. This is a world renowned festival of music, song and
dance with competitors from more than 50 countries. It is held annually in and around Llangollen.
Hi Chas, Lindsay and Chris,
Just wanted to thank you guys for the warmest welcome, the best introduction into narrow boating and the loveliest boat with everything on board we could, or indeed did need. We had a great week travelling from Beeston to Llangollen pausing overnight at Wrenbury and Ellesmere and on the return leg stopping at Whixall and Baddily. long days boating through the Welsh and English countryside was lovely as were cosy nights on the boat having dinner in front of the coal fire. All of this made for the most enjoyable week and the two of us and Ruby the bulldog had a fab week. Thanks guys , we will return.Paul and David.

We had a lovely week on the boat, and got all the way up to Trevor on the Llangollen before we had to turn back. It was our first time on a canal boat and the hour and a half that Chris spent with us talking us through the boat and showing us how to turn and go through the locks was invaluable. We certainly felt a little bit smug and superior when we came across hirers from other companies who didn’t seem to have a clue about how to do any of it!
As above, we all really enjoyed the week and have said that it is definitely something that we will do again, and we will certainly look to book with you again when we do.
Thanks once again for all your help,
Andy, Emma, George and William Haynes
Very friendly family run business with years of experience. Chas and Lindsay were on holiday the week we took one of their narrowboats (Snowmane) up the Llangollen but Lindsay was very helpful with advice on routes before our trip. Their staff were relaxed and accommodating and we want to give a special mention to George who sorted out a problem mid-holiday (our fault – not theirs) with speed, efficiency and a smile.
Having spent the last 4 narrowboat holidays on luxurious widebeams, we wondered how we’d feel going back to a narrowboat but we quickly settled into Snowmane. Chas and Lindsey have been in the business long enough to know what matters & ensure that the important things work. Namely – the shower was good and water was hot. You can run proper hair dryers off the power points and there’s plenty of them for chargers etc. The toilets worked well. Battery power was sufficient to provide lights that didn’t fade towards the end of the evening. Extra kitchen implement requirements were available on request. I thought the extra double bed (converting the dinette) was the easiest I’ve ever had to assemble. Everything worked well (apart from tv signal – but who really wants that on a narrowboat holiday?!).
One of our best holidays on the canals and certainly the best service we can remember.

This is the 3rd time we have booked, the 1st been backin 1987. Just back from a week on the Llangollen canal. The boat had everything needed for a comfortable stay. Chas, Lindsay and George were very friendly and extremely helpful even when approached by our very barky Dachshund Elvis!
Would definitely recommend and hopefully will be back again.

Second time that we have hired a boat from Chas Hardern and cruised the Llangollen Canal. A fantastic route from Beeston and over the aquaduct into Trevor and then up to Llangollen. Beautiful scenery, friendly folk and lots of lovely towns, villages, pubs and restaurants along the way.
We’ll be back!
