On this
page are photographs taken during February 2008 on the Trent and
Mersey Canal. As you can see the weather ranged from beautiful crisp
frosty mornings to bright sunlight and (a bit nippy) shirt sleeve
weather.
During
the winter the traffic on the canals is minimal. For peace and quiet and
a sense of serene isolation there is nothing quite like it, yet it is
still possible to meet other winter boaters at locks or in the pub for a
friendly unhurried chat.
A
Christmas or New Year break on a boat is a memorable event combining
the excitement of a holiday with the pleasure of the occasion. Imagine a
morning cruise with the sun rising slowly over a frost- white silent
landscape, bare tree branches glinting in the light. Christmas lunch
meanwhile is cooking gently in the oven, the aroma gently wafting onto
the backdeck.
Our
boats are all available during the winter, usually at times and dates
arranged to individual requirements and all have very efficient diesel
central heating. Our two berth boat Thorin also has a coal fire for that
extra ‘feel good’ factor.
Your
only restriction out of the Christmas period (when the whole system
should be open) will be British Waterways winter maintenance. You will
always find somewhere to go but need to check with us first as to your
options.
